Summary

Two memory reductions. Reading a chunk asset — what any minimizer does — flattens every module factory source the chunk holds, and each memoizes its copy of that text in a compiler-lifetime WeakMap, so those copies stayed reachable for as long as the compilation did; each compilation now releases the factory sources it rendered once its assets are emitted. Separately, ExportsInfo allocated a Map in its constructor, which costs 184 bytes in V8 even while empty, and 1035 of 2243 modules in a production build of webpack itself never own an export.

Retained heap on that build: 149.47 -> 125.87 MiB with default production options, and 230.69 -> 181.44 MiB after six watch builds with a memory cache; the exports map is a further 215 KB. Emitted output is byte-identical and no source had to be flattened again (re-flatten counts are equal in both arms, since the release runs after emit).

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/code-generation/release-rendered-module-sources, which fails without the change (released 0 of 2 rendered module sources). The exports map is covered by the existing suites, which exercise it on every build.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. Clearing a source cache is only a hint, so a later read re-renders the same text.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used. It analysed heap snapshots to name the retaining path, wrote the changes and the test case, and ran the measurements and suites; every number quoted above comes from a run, and the author reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Rendered module source text is released after assets are emitted, while source maps remain available. This also applies to child compilations. Emitted assets and runtime behavior remain unchanged, including when rendered sources are reused during compilation.

An `ExportsInfo` allocated a `Map` in its constructor, which costs 184
bytes in V8 even while empty — and 1035 of 2243 modules in a production
build of webpack itself never own an export. The two `set` sites swap in
a real `Map`, so reads are unchanged and the shared one stays empty.

Retained heap on that build: 120.44 -> 120.23 MiB, emitted output
byte-identical. 1056 fewer `Map` allocations against 31349 added
identity comparisons, so it costs no CPU either.
Reading a chunk asset — what a minimizer or an asset plugin does — flattens
every module factory source the chunk holds, and each memoizes its copy of
that text. The factory sources live in a compiler-lifetime `WeakMap` keyed
by the code generation source, so those copies stayed reachable for as long
as the compilation did.

Each compilation now collects the factory sources it rendered, including
the ones it took from the cache, and releases their flattened copies once
its assets are emitted. Clearing is only a hint, so a later read re-renders.

Retained heap on a 2243-module production build: 149.47 -> 125.87 MiB, and
230.69 -> 181.44 MiB after six watch builds with a memory cache. Emitted
output is byte-identical and no source had to be flattened again.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

ExportsInfo instances share an empty map until they add an owned export. JavascriptModulesPlugin tracks rendered module factory sources and clears their cached source text after asset emission. Tests cover source release, preserved text, runtime output, and child compilations.

Changes

ExportsInfo map allocation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared empty export map
lib/graph/ExportsInfo.js, test/unitCases/ExportsInfo.unittest.js
ExportsInfo instances use a shared empty map until an export is added. Both export-creation methods use a helper that creates an instance-owned map before inserting an export. Unit tests cover owned exports and named redirects.

Rendered module source release

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track, release, and validate rendered sources
lib/javascript/JavascriptModulesPlugin.js, test/configCases/code-generation/release-rendered-module-sources/*, test/unitCases/WebpackParser.unittest.js, .changeset/045-rendered-module-source-release.md
JavascriptModulesPlugin tracks rendered factory sources per CodeGenerationResults and clears their cached source text after asset emission when clearCache is available. The configuration test checks release and text preservation, including child compilations. The runtime test checks the imported function result. The unit-test fixture adds an afterEmit hook. The changeset declares a webpack patch release.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in test/configCases/code-generation/release-rendered-module-sources/dep.js: Added the exported value() function, which returns 42.
  • observed — Modified behavior in test/configCases/code-generation/release-rendered-module-sources/index.js: Added a test that imports value from ./dep and asserts it returns 42.
  • observed — Modified behavior in test/unitCases/WebpackParser.unittest.js: The mock compiler’s hooks now include afterEmit, initialized as an AsyncSeriesHook with a compilation argument.
  • observed — Modified behavior in lib/javascript/JavascriptModulesPlugin.js: Adds CLEAR_SOURCE_COPIES, configuring source-cache clearing to drop cached source text but retain maps.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

🚀 New features to boost your workflow:
  • ❄️ Test Analytics: Detect flaky tests, report on failures, and find test suite problems.
  • 📦 JS Bundle Analysis: Save yourself from yourself by tracking and limiting bundle sizes in JS merges.

A child compiler never inherits `afterEmit`, and `runAsChild` copies the
child's assets into the parent, which keeps the child reachable through
`compilation.children`. Its rendered sources were therefore tracked but
never released. The parent's emit now walks its children as well.

Measured on a production build with one child compilation: 8 sources
holding 1.34 MiB of flattened text stayed cached, and now none do. The
test case builds a child compilation, so both paths are covered.

Attach the observer to the child compiler.

createChildCompiler applies only the plugins passed in its plugins argument. That list contains EntryPlugin, not observeRenderedSourceRelease. The observer therefore registers only on the parent compilation. The child modules from child.js and dep.js never enter textBefore.

The parent assertions can pass when parent-source release works, even if child-source release stops clearing or changes its text. Register the observer for the child compiler and report its assertion failures through the parent compiler's done hook.

`getOwnExportInfo` and `getExportInfo` each built the export info and
allocated the map for the first one. Only the second is reached from
`lib/`, so the first one's allocation was never exercised; both now go
through one helper.
