Summary

An inline <style> body webpack rewrites did not come back as it was read: the newline the CSS pipeline appends between a stylesheet's modules was written into the body, and output.pathinfo's module header went above the header the previous build left there. So a page built from an emitted page gained a blank line before every </style> and one more header per pass, each header restating in base64 the body plus every header before it.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/watchCases/css/html-style-module-header/, whose page arrives carrying a header of its own and whose sheet changes between the two builds; the configCases/html snapshots for style-tag, foreign-style-body, iframe-srcdoc-css and minimize-transforms are re-recorded.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. An emitted <style> body loses a trailing blank line, and a header a page was read with is no longer kept alongside the new one.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Claude Code (Opus 5) was used throughout: it traced both defects to CssModulesPlugin.renderModule's per-module newline and ModuleInfoHeaderPlugin's header, wrote the change and the watch case, and ran the affected suites — including the check that the watch case fails on each defect separately before the fix.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Webpack strips previous module headers from inline stylesheet sources and preserves inline style content during rebuilds. The change also normalizes trailing newlines and adds watch coverage for stale-header removal.

Changes

Inline style rebuild handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Strip prior module headers
lib/template/ModuleInfoHeaderPlugin.js, lib/html/HtmlParser.js
Adds header matching and repeated leading-header removal. HtmlParser applies it before creating inline stylesheet dependencies.
Normalize inline style bodies
lib/dependencies/HtmlInlineStyleDependency.js
Removes one trailing newline from non-attribute style bodies and escapes character data when required.
Validate rebuilt style modules
test/watchCases/css/html-style-module-header/*, .changeset/015-html-inline-style-rebuild.md
Adds watch fixtures, configuration, helper logic, assertions, and patch-release metadata for rebuilt inline styles.
Align CSS reproduction output
tooling/compare-css-tools.js
Updates reproOf to show output near the first differing position when the divergence is far into the compared text.

Generated code size

Comparing base (1b9875d) to head (e743489). Merging this pull request changes the size of 11 asset(s) whose tests it leaves untouched.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2262 test(s), 8178 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

The CSS pipeline appends a newline per module so two modules of a
stylesheet cannot run together. Written back into a `<style>` body that
newline is not a fixed point: the body the page ships ends one newline
longer than the body it was read from, so a page built from an emitted
one gains a blank line before every `</style>`, and another with each
pass after that.

The write-back drops it, leaving the body ending in the whitespace its
own source ends with. The attribute form already did the same, for its
own reason: a `style="…"` value has to stay on one line.
`output.pathinfo`, which development turns on, heads a sheet with the
module it was read as. A `<style>` body is read back on the next build of
the page, so that header came in as part of the sheet and the new one
went above it: the page grew a header per pass, each restating in base64
the body plus every header before it.

The body sheds the header it arrives with, so the module this build reads
is the sheet the author wrote and the header it writes is the only one. A
page already carrying a stack of them sheds the stack. Only a header
webpack wrote is taken: the shape is `generateHeader`'s, it has to be at
the front, and an author's own `/*!` banner is left alone.
`stripHeaders` went in between `generateHeader` and the block documenting
it, leaving its two parameters implicitly `any` — which `lint:types`
catches and an eslint run over the touched files does not.

One changeset per pull request, one sentence of at most 80 characters.
A page built twice by a webpack that kept the header it read carries a
stack, and shedding it is one line the case never reached: with one
header, a single strip and the loop that repeats it are the same code.
The page now arrives headed twice, so `while` reading `if` fails it.

A repro is cut to a line each way from the start, so sites running past
that column printed the same prefix twice and left the respelling itself
off the end — and the expectation answering for it, which reads that same
string, could not see it either. `webpack-ignore/style.css` reported its
escaped `@import` as a divergence for that reason and reddened the gate.

Each side is now shown from where the two part, so what moved is in the
line and the entry that answers for it matches.

[Compare Source](webpack/webpack@v5.111.1...v5.112.0)

##### Minor Changes

- Apply `plugins` set on a multi-configuration array to the `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22702](webpack/webpack#22702))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.dropOverriddenDeclarations`, dropping a declaration a later one overrides where no target is named. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22175](webpack/webpack#22175))

- Export more plugins under their scope, move eleven loose exports under theirs, deprecate the old, and expose `template.DependencyTemplate`, `module.NullFactory` and `util.makeSerializable`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22261](webpack/webpack#22261))

- Let `util.makeSerializable` take several requests, current one first. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22340](webpack/webpack#22340))

- Emit the source map `scopes` field, so a debugger resolves imported ESM bindings by name. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21999](webpack/webpack#21999))

- Add `library.entryExports: "all"` to expose the exports of every entry module. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22235](webpack/webpack#22235))

- Recognize a required `const` binding assigned to `exports` as a re-export. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22276](webpack/webpack#22276))

- Accept glob patterns in more path, module and file filter options. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22422](webpack/webpack#22422))

- Bundle a run of inline `<script>` tags into one chunk the page can inline. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22188](webpack/webpack#22188))

- Add `module.parser.javascript.topLevelThis` for classic-script `this` semantics. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22193](webpack/webpack#22193))

- Add `include`/`exclude` version and request filters to shared modules. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22297](webpack/webpack#22297))

- Keep module side-effect information in ESM output as PURE annotations. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21789](webpack/webpack#21789))

- Add `optimization.splitChunks.dedupDepth` to discover chunk intersections. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22240](webpack/webpack#22240))

- Add `optimization.minimizeOptions.json`, on by default with `futureDefaults`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22286](webpack/webpack#22286))

- Add `SSRManifestPlugin` and fix server-rendered CSS collection and adoption. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21913](webpack/webpack#21913))

stating the same condition; read what a condition declares.
