Summary

First step of moving the JavaScript minifier (lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js) off terser's AST and onto plain ESTree. This PR deletes terser's lenient parser. Webpack's own parser is now the only parser, with no silent fallback to terser.

  • A source our parser refuses is now refused. Before, terser read sources the spec makes early errors.
  • Terser's parse.expression, parse.strict and parse.experimental_typescript options are now rejected.
  • Module syntax in a script, import defer and shebangs still work, through our parser's own options. A shebang source always fell back to terser before; read by our parser it printed the #! line twice, which this PR fixes.
  • syntax-printer.js goes from 32,055 to 27,176 lines.

Before / after (compress: false, mangle: false):

Input Before After
class X{static{console.log(#x in this)}} class X{static{console.log(#x in this)}} SyntaxError: Private field '#x' must be declared in an enclosing class
a = { set b() {} }; a={set b(){}}; SyntaxError: setter should have exactly one param
#!/usr/bin/env node\nrun(); #!/usr/bin/env node\nrun(); unchanged

Test changes:

  • minify-corpora.spectest.js:
    • Two refusals now match regardless of message, since the parsers word errors differently.
    • Sources webpack refuses where terser reads them are listed by source in REFUSED_BY_WEBPACK, each with the spec rule it breaks.
    • test262 tests that expect a parse error need no entry.
  • syntax-printer.unittest.js:
    • These tests used to force terser's parser, so they never exercised webpack's parse path.
    • The differences that path already had on main are now listed in PARSED_DIFFERENTLY, each with a reason: source-map columns, one comment's placement, an escaped directive, and a private-in misprint that terser shares.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

refactor

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes.

  • test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js: REFUSED_BY_WEBPACK, refusals compared as refusals, test262 negatives.
  • test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js: dropped options, global_defs @ sources.
  • test/unitCases/syntax-printer-estree.unittest.js: both conversions read from the same ESTree.
  • Removed test/unitCases/syntax-printer-terser-parser.unittest.js, which tested the deleted parser.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No for default builds: the printer is only used under experiments.futureDefaults. Under that flag, sources the spec makes early errors and terser's non-program parse options (expression, strict, experimental_typescript) are now refused.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Updated docs/syntax.md (the JavaScript printer and corpora gate).

Use of AI

Written with Claude Code: it made the code, test and doc changes and ran the printer unit tests, lint and the terser, swc and oxc corpora locally. test262 is left to CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes
    • Minification now uses webpack’s parser exclusively and refuses inputs that trigger parser errors or use unsupported parsing options; it no longer falls back to another parser.
    • Some inputs accepted by the reference parser may now be rejected. Other parser differences may affect generated output or source maps.
    • An assert(...) call on the line after an import without a semicolon is now parsed as a function call, not as import attributes.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified parser limitations and how minifier results are compared, including cases where webpack rejects input accepted by the reference parser.

…inifying

Drop terser's lenient parser from the printer: webpack's parser is the
only one, so a source it refuses is refused, and terser's `expression`,
`strict` and `experimental_typescript` parse options are refused too.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The printer-table generator and generated data retain tables used by the printer. Parser and corpus tests account for unsupported options, parser differences, and webpack refusals. Import parsing distinguishes a newline-separated assert(...) call from a legacy import assert clause.

Changes

Parser and Minification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Printer token tables
tooling/generate-js-data.js, lib/javascript/syntax-printer-data.js, docs/syntax.md
The generator and generated data retain keyword, reserved-word, operator, and precedence tables. The documentation identifies these as printer tables.
Parser and printer comparisons
test/unitCases/syntax-printer*.unittest.js
Unit tests compare results using webpack’s parser, cover unsupported parse options and listed parser differences, and pass both ESTree conversion implementations the same Acorn-parsed AST.
Corpus outcomes and refusals
test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js, test/helpers/oxcSmaller.js, docs/syntax.md, .changeset/098-minify-with-webpacks-printer.md
Corpus tests compare generated code and error presence, track expected webpack refusals, and exclude parse-phase negative cases from refusal handling. Documentation and the changeset describe minification with webpack’s parser and early-error refusals.

Import-Following Assert Calls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Import assert token handling
lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/WebpackParser.unittest.js, test/configCases/parsing/import-then-assert-call/*, .changeset/099-import-then-assert-call.md
Legacy import assert attributes require an unescaped contextual assert token with no preceding line break. Tests cover a newline-separated assert(...) call and rejection of escaped assert before an attribute clause.

Combine the related release notes into one changeset before merging. No other actionable risk is established by the supplied evidence.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a6f8d

The change makes parsing stricter without changing which default builds select the new minifier. No new privilege or sensitive-data access path has been demonstrated. Downstream failure handling remains only partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is build-source processing through the printer and builds selecting jsMinify through futureDefaults. The unchanged selection gate provides counterevidence to expanded default-build exposure; external callers and hosted-build isolation were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Source text and configured parse options enter a validation and parsing boundary. Unsupported option names throw before parsing, and parser errors are propagated rather than delegated to a fallback parser. These are syntax controls, not authorization or sandbox controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — For an individual parse invocation, conversion context is restored in finally, including on conversion failure. A supplied existing toplevel is appended only after parsing and token finalization succeed. These checks support local failure containment but do not verify atomicity of the complete minification and asset-publication pipeline.

Generated code size

Comparing base (b17fa7d) to head (a6f8dac). Merging this pull request adds 1 new asset(s).

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 1 1 ⚪ added +137 B ⚪ added +144 B —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8313 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset that both runs emit changed size — everything below is new or deleted.

1 asset(s) this pull request adds
Asset Raw Gzip (9) Brotli (11) Zstd (19)
⚪ added parsing/import-then-assert-call bundle0.js 144 B 137 B 109 B 126 B

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2301 test(s), 8314 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

Parse an `assert(...)` call on the line after an import with no
semicolon as a statement, end a hashbang at any line terminator, list the
decorators proposal's `accessor` and an empty `with {}` in the corpora
gate, and accept a reference misprint only where webpack still prints.
