Summary

_unwrapCalc takes the parentheses off a folded calc() where the bare value means the same thing, and already declines four shapes where it does not. A fifth: stroke-width, stroke-dasharray, stroke-dashoffset and -webkit-perspective read a bare number as a length of their own, where Gecko refuses that same number inside a calc() — so stroke-width: calc(2) computes nothing there and the stroke-width: 2 it was printed as computes 2px. The printer was reviving a declaration the engine had thrown away. Blink and WebKit read both alike, which is why one engine alone could not see it.

Swept every property mdn-data and the prefix table name — 887 of them, at three numbers each — against all three engines: those four are the whole set, and after the change Gecko and WebKit both report none. Both the fold and the declaration printer ask, since one reads the declaration as written and the other the standard spelling it maps to; perspective is named for that second path, and its own two spellings are refused by all three anyway.

Two filed value defects come out with it, their defect being fixed.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — configCases/css/minify-calc-number-outside, with the four beside the same properties carrying a unit and the ones that read a number as a number. Removing any of the five names from the supplement fails the case, which I checked by doing it.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — those four now print what the source wrote.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used. It swept the properties against Chromium, Gecko and WebKit, found the four, wrote the change and the case, and broke each name to check the case catches it. I reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed CSS minification to preserve calc() expressions for properties where removing the wrapper could revive an invalid declaration or alter browser behavior.
    • Continued simplifying equivalent calc() expressions when properties safely accept unit-based or bare numeric values.
  • Tests

    • Added regression coverage for affected CSS properties, including perspective and SVG stroke properties.
    • Verified that minified CSS preserves or removes calc() wrappers appropriately across supported cases.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CSS minifier now preserves calc() for bare numbers in properties that interpret them as lengths outside calc(). Metadata, printer logic, regression tests, syntax-equivalence expectations, and patch-release metadata were updated.

Changes

CSS calc() number handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Property metadata and generated export
tooling/generate-css-data.js, lib/css/syntax.js
The CSS data supplement lists properties that read bare numbers as lengths outside calc(). The generated export provides this property set to the syntax module.
Syntax printer preservation
lib/css/syntax.js
The printer detects these properties, preserves calc() around bare-number terms, and prevents those terms from folding into lengths.
Regression coverage and release metadata
test/configCases/css/minify-calc-number-outside/*, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js, .gitattributes, .changeset/035-css-calc-number-outside.md
The new minification case checks preserved and folded values. Firefox defect entries are removed, fixture line endings are configured, and patch-release metadata is added.

Four properties read a bare number as a length of their own where Gecko
refuses that same number inside a `calc()`, so dropping the parentheses
brought a declaration it had thrown away back to life — measured over every
property `mdn-data` and the prefix table name, in all three engines. Both the
fold and the declaration printer ask, since one reads the declaration as
written and the other the standard spelling it maps to.
