Keep generated light-dark() copies nested or resolve their selectors.
A target such as ["chrome 100", "firefox 100", "safari 15.4"] supports whereSelector but not lightDark or nesting. With minification and prefixing enabled, a prefixable nested selector such as &:fullscreen enters the copy-hoisting path.
When _lightDarkToggle adds schemeCopy, it stores the original prelude inside rest. _writeNested resolves only the hoisted rule's outer prelude. The generated @media rule therefore retains &:fullscreen instead of resolving it against the original parent selector. The hoisted copy can target the wrong selector.
Keep rules containing schemeCopy nested, or resolve the generated @media selector separately for every hoisted copy.

Let’s rebase |
A prefix copy turns one rule into several, and a rewritten rule was left
where it was written — so a target reading no nesting was handed nesting:
`.n{&:fullscreen{top:0}}` printed `.n{&:-webkit-full-screen{top:0}&:fullscreen{top:0}}`,
which that target reads as nothing. Every copy carries the rule's own block,
so each goes out against the parent under the prelude it was written as, and
the run joins them into the one list they are.
Two things the hoist owed the prefixing. A copy is a rule of its own — one selector an engine cannot read takes the whole list with it — so the run leaves each where it wrote it rather than joining them into a list a target drops whole. And a rule holding rules of its own is not hoisted: those were resolved against the prelude they were written under, which every copy but one is not, so a copy would go out without them.

Summary
A prefix copy turns one rule into several, and a rewritten rule was left where it was written. So a target that reads no nesting was handed nesting:
.n{&:fullscreen{top:0}}printed.n{&:-webkit-full-screen{top:0}&:fullscreen{top:0}}, which is a block that target cannot parse — the declarations in it are read by nothing, in exactly the browsers the lowering exists for. A second pass wrote.n:-webkit-full-screen,.n:fullscreen{top:0}.Every copy carries the rule's own block, so there is no one block to join onto but there are rules to take out. Each goes out against the parent under the prelude it was written as, and the run joins them into the one list they are. A prefixed rule that was never nested is untouched, and a nested rule no prefix rewrote goes out as it already did.
tooling/compare-css-tools.jsgains one written fixture, which is what found this. The installed corpus repeats what ships, so what ships rarely is what the sweep rarely reads: measured across the 3067 stylesheets it collects,@view-transition, a bare@layer a;statement andtoggle()appear in none;@font-feature-values,@font-palette-values,@position-try,@document,@import layer(),:defined,:state(),device-cmyk(),paint()andcalc-size()in one;:user-invalid,:fullscreen,rem(),abs(),sign(),pow(),sqrt(),hypot(),exp(),atan2(),anchor-size(),cross-fade()andelement()in two. The fixture writes those in the shapes the rewrites act on — the same rule twice, a rule standing between two, and nested so the hoist reaches them. With the fix reverted the sweep reports the fixture; with the fixture taken back out the same reverted fix is reported by nothing across the other 985 stylesheets. What kind of change does this PR introduce?
fix
Did you add tests for your changes?
Yes — four unit cases for the hoist (one prefixed rule, a prefixed and a plain one, two prefixed, and a parent that declares as well), one for a prefixed rule that was never nested. The case asserting the old behaviour,
keeps a rule the prefixes rewrote where it was written, now asserts the rules coming out. Removing either half — passing the copies, or pushing them — fails five of them, and without the push the copy is dropped from the output altogether, which I checked by doing both.Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
No, and it repairs one: the nesting left behind was read by no target the lowering runs for.
If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Use of AI
AI was used. It measured which constructs the corpus reaches, wrote the fixture from that, reduced the finding it produced to
.n{&:fullscreen{top:0}}, wrote the change and the cases, and broke both halves of it to check a case catches each. I reviewed the result.Summary by CodeRabbit
