Summary

The invariant sweeps now also ask idempotence of every source cut short, which found CSS and HTML output that changed again on a second pass: a string, url, comment or bracket left open at the end of input, an HTML end tag cut off by EOF, and attributes left unsorted past a dropped one. It also retires the three HTML entries the sweep carried as owed: removeEmptyElements, removeEmptyAttributes and mergeStyles judged a <style> or style="" on its source rather than on what the CSS renderer printed. On the async renderer path a real build takes, processAsync prints again with the answers in hand when one overturns such a choice, and a srcdoc answered empty is written as the bare name.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — new test/configCases/html/minimize-end-of-input/, extended html/minimize-empty-elements, html/minimize-merge-styles and html/minimize-sort, cases in CssSyntax.unittest.js / HtmlSyntax.unittest.js, and the cut-source sweeps in tooling/compare-{css,html}-tools.js (both at 0 findings).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a — the new sweep relation is described in AGENTS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CSS and HTML minification now produces stable output across repeated passes, including when input ends partway through a construct.
    • Incomplete CSS tokens, HTML comments, and processing instructions are closed in output where needed.
    • HTML minimization accounts for rendered content when handling empty elements and merging adjacent styles.
    • Attribute sorting maintains the correct order when other attributes are removed during printing.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CSS printing now closes constructs left open at end of input. HTML printing uses rendered output for stylesheet, empty-element, and attribute decisions. Comparison tooling checks idempotence on truncated CSS and HTML inputs.

Changes

Minifier output handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Close CSS constructs at end of input
.changeset/*, lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js
CSS printing closes functions, blocks, strings, URLs, and comments left open at end of input. Tests cover minification, beautification, custom-property rewriting, and second-pass stability. The syntax-equivalence probe places the custom-property value last.
Reprint when embedded answers change decisions
lib/util/SourceProcessor.js, lib/html/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js
Deferred writes can report when an answer changes a print-time decision. HTML printing can reuse embedded answers and reprint when an answer changes that decision.
Use rendered output in HTML decisions
lib/html/syntax-parser.js, test/configCases/html/minimize-empty-elements/*, test/configCases/html/minimize-merge-styles/*, test/configCases/html/minimize-sort/*, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js
HTML printing uses rendered CSS and surviving attributes in empty-element removal, attribute output and sorting, and stylesheet merging. Tests cover empty rendered styles, srcdoc, adjacent stylesheets, and attribute sorting.
Handle HTML input ending mid-construct
lib/html/syntax-parser.js, lib/html/syntax-printer.js, test/configCases/html/minimize-end-of-input/*
HTML printing discards end tags cut off at end of input and closes unfinished comments. Fixtures cover truncated HTML and embedded CSS. End-to-end tests check second-pass stability.
Check idempotence on truncated inputs
AGENTS.md, tooling/compare-css-tools.js, tooling/compare-html-tools.js
The comparison tools generate CSS and HTML cuts and run idempotence checks on them. The tooling description documents this coverage.

Match deferred answers by occurrence identity.

When two deferred HTML offers have the same type, hostType, source, and as, deferredKey produces the same key. The later known.set replaces the earlier answer. During the second print, both offers then receive the later answer through _embeddedAnswers.

This can change output when repeated CSS or other embedded sources produce different answers and one answer causes a reprint. Preserve each offer’s occurrence identity when storing and retrieving answers.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

🚀 New features to boost your workflow:
  • ❄️ Test Analytics: Detect flaky tests, report on failures, and find test suite problems.
  • 📦 JS Bundle Analysis: Save yourself from yourself by tracking and limiting bundle sizes in JS merges.

The invariants sweep now also asks idempotence of each source cut short,
since the end of the input is where the tokenizer and parser close what the
source left open, and a printer writing after it has to close it too. It
found:

- CSS: a custom property value, or text kept as written, that ran into
EOF inside a bracket, string, url, comment or after a `\` was echoed
open, and the rule's `}` printed after it was read inside it: Chromium
dropped the declaration, and each pass added another `}`. It is closed
in a stylesheet, and left as written in a `style=""`, where nothing is
printed after it and Chromium keeps it open.
- CSS: a url cut off at EOF was closed instead of normalized, so a second
pass lowercased or trimmed it; a `\` it ended on escaped its `)`.
- HTML: a kept comment or `<?…` left open at EOF swallowed the
`</body></html>` printed after it; it is closed from its data.
- HTML: an end tag the input ended inside (`</p`, `</br`) was emitted,
building the element a stray one inserts; §13.2.5.8 drops it, as the
start tag case already did. Not in raw text, which reads it as text.
- HTML: `sortAttributes` stopped short on an attribute the print drops,
which had no rank, so a second pass finished the sort.

The cuts add about two seconds to the CSS sweep: each keeps only the
top-level construct it falls in, the first one small enough. Three HTML
findings in the same family — `removeEmptyElements` and `mergeStyles`
decide on the source before the renderer has emptied or closed a body —
are recorded as owed expectations rather than fixed here.
removeEmptyElements, removeEmptyAttributes and mergeStyles judged a <style>
or style attribute on its source, so one the renderer minified to nothing, or
closed, only changed on a second pass. The async path prints again with the
answers in hand when one overturns such a choice.
A <!-- comment reads > as data, so one the input ended inside after a > was
left open and swallowed the end tags printed after it. Also reprint when a
deferred sheet answer leaves open a sheet its source closed, cut the CSS sweep
inside comments, and fold the changesets into one.
A value left open swallowed the declaration written after it, so the raw side
set nothing once the printer started closing what the input left open.

Footnotes

  1. 6 benchmarks were skipped, so the baseline results were used instead. If they were deleted from the codebase, click here and archive them to remove them from the performance reports. ↩

  2. No successful run was found on main (f651e82) during the generation of this report, so edd6306 was used instead as the comparison base. There might be some changes unrelated to this pull request in this report. ↩

The two values WebKit already has filed for the unimplemented paint() now
reach the var() path too, since the printer closes what they leave open.

…2302)

* fix(html): minify a merged <style> run as the one sheet it prints

mergeStyles joined each sheet as minified on its own, so a second pass
over the joined element folded rules across them (`a{color:red}` and
`b{color:red}` became `a,b{color:red}` only then), and a blank sheet
joined to a rule kept its whitespace. The joined run is now rendered
again as one sheet; on the async path processAsync asks for what a
reprint offers that no earlier print did, a bounded number of times.

Also covers the branches #22290 left untested and drops a whitespace
skip in the CSS end-of-input closer that no input can reach.

* perf(html): join a <style> run's sources and minify it once

A sheet whose source ends at a rule (a `}` or an at-rule's `;`, outside
every string, comment and block) is appended to as written, so a run
is offered to the CSS minifier once: no per-sheet renders, and no
second print on the async path. Only a sheet the input left open is
still joined on its answer, which is the one case processAsync has to
print again for.

* fix(html): stop a <style> run at a sheet the input left open

Nothing is appended to a sheet whose source does not end at a rule, so
a run is decided on its sources alone and processAsync goes back to one
reprint with no reprint loop. A second pass reads such a sheet closed
and joins it; the two fixtures carrying one record that as expected in
the HTML sweep.

* fix(html): close a sheet the input left open before joining the next

A <style> the input left inside a string, comment or block, or with a
statement unfinished, is closed as its own end of input closed it (the
quote, comment end and closers, then `{}` or `;`) and the next sheet is
appended to that, so every run joins again and is minified once, with no
reprint. Only a sheet ending on a lone backslash is not joined, and none
is joined printed as written, where the closing would stay in a custom
property's value.

A syntax-equivalence test holds each such run to the separate sheets'
computed styles in the real browser the job runs.

* fix(html): read a lone @ as a delimiter when closing a sheet to join

A lone @ opens an ordinary rule's prelude, which only {} ends, so closing it with ; let the next sheet's first rule be swallowed. Found by cutting every test and corpus stylesheet and comparing the joined sheet with the two apart in Chromium.

* fix(html): read an unquoted url as one token when closing a sheet to join

An unquoted url( is a single token, and a bad one runs to the first ) its remnants reach, so a ( inside it opens nothing. Counting it as a block added a ) that broke the declaration after it. Found by the same Chromium comparison over every cut of every test and corpus stylesheet.

* fix(css, html): keep a custom property's value the input ran out in open

A browser stores such a value as written, open, so the minifier prints it
that way instead of closing it, and a <style> run is not joined after one.
Cover the url scanner's remaining branches.

* fix(html): stop a <style> run at a sheet declaring a namespace

A namespace applies to the whole sheet declaring it, so a sheet joined after
one read its selectors in it. An escaped at-rule name now stops a run too,
and a linear scan replaces the backtracking custom-property regexp.

* test(css): retire two WebKit value defects the open custom property fixed

A custom property's value the input ran out in is now printed open as written,
so WebKit reads the paint() probe the same through var() and both entries
stopped matching.
