Summary

A chunk extracted from a page could only be named after the page and the tag's position (page-0), with its file falling back to the tag's url — there was no way to say what a run of inline scripts should be called. module.parser.html.chunkName takes a template ([page], [name], [index], [type]) or a function of the same values, and a <!-- webpackChunkName: "header" --> comment names one tag; either is also the stem the file is emitted under. It sits beside sources, which decides what a page extracts, because the name is minted in the same parse — output.html would have tied naming to the option whose presence wraps every entry in a generated page.

Two semantics worth a reviewer's eye: a named inline tag leads a run instead of joining the one before it, so the name covers the tags that follow, and two tags of one page may not claim the same name, which would otherwise append them to one entry and merge code the document keeps apart.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — configCases/html/chunk-name-option (template and function forms, run merging, file stems) and configCases/html/chunk-name-comment (the comment winning over the option, run leadership, an external tag, and a warnings.js for an unusable value).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — the option is opt-in and unset keeps today's naming. getRequestBaseName moved from HtmlModulesPlugin to lib/util/identifier.js, which is internal.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The option's description is in the schema; module.parser.html.chunkName and the webpackChunkName comment are worth a line each in the experiments.html docs after merge.

Use of AI

Yes. Claude Code was used to write the implementation and the tests, and to check the placement of the option against the existing surfaces (it started under output.html and moved after that option turned out to switch on per-entry page generation). The html config cases, the affected unit tests and yarn lint were run locally on the rebased branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added configurable names for chunks extracted from HTML scripts and links.
    • Supports templates with page, tag, index, and type placeholders, plus function-based naming.
    • Added webpackChunkName comments to override configured names for individual tags.
    • Generated chunk and page filenames now reflect requested names.
    • Duplicate or conflicting names are handled safely, with clear errors for page-name conflicts.
    • Invalid chunk-name comments now produce a warning.

`module.parser.html.chunkName` takes a template — `[page]`, `[name]`,
`[index]`, `[type]` — or a function of the same values, and a
`webpackChunkName` comment before a tag names that one. Either is the stem its
file is emitted under too, so a named chunk is no longer called after the page
or the tag's url.

It sits beside `sources`, which decides what a page extracts, because the name
is minted in the same parse: `output.html` would have tied naming to the option
whose presence wraps every entry in a generated page.

A named inline tag leads a run rather than joining the one before it, so the
name covers what follows; two tags of a page may not claim one name, which
would merge entries the document keeps apart.

`getRequestBaseName` moves to `lib/util/identifier.js`, the home for path
helpers, now that the parser needs it as well.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Apply link.chunkName to linked HTML pages.

recordNames stores chunkName only for non-HTML entries. It then recurses into linked pages using only link.entryName. The linked page filename is therefore derived from its resource basename, so a named HTML link can emit page.html instead of the requested chunk-name stem.

Carry link.chunkName by linked entry name into the linked-page filename calculation. Add a configuration test for named HTML links.

Regenerate the schema artifacts.

HtmlModulesPlugin validates parser options with schemas/plugins/HtmlParserOptions.check. This cohort does not update that generated validator, declarations, or types.d.ts. A configuration with module.parser.html.chunkName can therefore fail validation as an unknown property.

Run yarn fix:special and commit its generated outputs. As per path instructions: “Schema edits must be followed by yarn fix:special regeneration in the same PR.”

Falling back to `<name>-<index>` could land on a name another tag of the page
already held, which merges two entries into one. Every candidate is checked
now, counting on from the tag's own position.

A `type: "html"` link's page kept its own path as its filename, so a name it
asked for reached its entry and not its file. The changeset also named the
option by the path it had before the move.

Comment thread lib/html/HtmlModulesPlugin.js
A second page asking for a taken name was appended to the entry holding
it, so both were emitted as one file and the build died on an asset
conflict. Claim each page name by request instead: a link to the page
that already holds it shares that page, anything else is reported.

### [`v5.112.0`](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/blob/HEAD/CHANGELOG.md#51120)

[Compare Source](webpack/webpack@v5.111.1...v5.112.0)

##### Minor Changes

- Apply `plugins` set on a multi-configuration array to the `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22702](webpack/webpack#22702))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.dropOverriddenDeclarations`, dropping a declaration a later one overrides where no target is named. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22175](webpack/webpack#22175))

- Export more plugins under their scope, move eleven loose exports under theirs, deprecate the old, and expose `template.DependencyTemplate`, `module.NullFactory` and `util.makeSerializable`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22261](webpack/webpack#22261))

- Let `util.makeSerializable` take several requests, current one first. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22340](webpack/webpack#22340))

- Emit the source map `scopes` field, so a debugger resolves imported ESM bindings by name. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21999](webpack/webpack#21999))

- Add `library.entryExports: "all"` to expose the exports of every entry module. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22235](webpack/webpack#22235))

- Recognize a required `const` binding assigned to `exports` as a re-export. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22276](webpack/webpack#22276))

- Accept glob patterns in more path, module and file filter options. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22422](webpack/webpack#22422))

- Bundle a run of inline `<script>` tags into one chunk the page can inline. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22188](webpack/webpack#22188))

- Add `module.parser.javascript.topLevelThis` for classic-script `this` semantics. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22193](webpack/webpack#22193))

- Add `module.parser.html.chunkName` and a `webpackChunkName` comment for tags. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22200](webpack/webpack#22200))

- Add `include`/`exclude` version and request filters to shared modules. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22297](webpack/webpack#22297))

- Keep module side-effect information in ESM output as PURE annotations. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21789](webpack/webpack#21789))

- Add `optimization.splitChunks.dedupDepth` to discover chunk intersections. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22240](webpack/webpack#22240))

- Add `optimization.minimizeOptions.json`, on by default with `futureDefaults`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22286](webpack/webpack#22286))

- Add `SSRManifestPlugin` and fix server-rendered CSS collection and adoption. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21913](webpack/webpack#21913))

- Add an `ignore` hook to `output.copy` and keep unfollowed `from` symlinks. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22216](webpack/webpack#22216))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.convertApproximateColors`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22157](webpack/webpack#22157))

- Add XML parsing and SVG/XML minification with data URLs and attribute sorting. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22269](webpack/webpack#22269))

- Extract CSS/HTML license comments like JS and safely shorten CSS gradients. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22408](webpack/webpack#22408))

- Resolve an async `DefinePlugin.runtimeValue` over an async `beforeParse` hook. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22210](webpack/webpack#22210))

- Add CSS `customMedia`/`customSelectors` minimize options; resolve chained names. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22360](webpack/webpack#22360))

- Rename the `Harmony*` names to `ESM*` and deprecate the old spellings. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22283](webpack/webpack#22283))

- Reduce `css.syntax`/`html.syntax` to `parser`, `printer`, `SourceProcessor` with one node path. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22233](webpack/webpack#22233))

- Add a JavaScript `SyntaxTree` read like the CSS one, and `toEstreeObject`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22608](webpack/webpack#22608))

- Fix minified code that threw, and add `pure_conversions` and `pure_heritage`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22473](webpack/webpack#22473))

- Shorten more CSS values and selectors, fold longhands, order declarations and gather layer blocks. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22442](webpack/webpack#22442))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.charset`; `false` drops `@charset` for UTF-8 CSS. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22632](webpack/webpack#22632))

##### Patch Changes

- Join rules a gathered `@layer` leaves adjacent, and an at-rule with a later one (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22204](webpack/webpack#22204))
stating the same condition; read what a condition declares.
