Summary

Lowering nesting parts the parent from the nested selector with a space, whatever the nested selector opens on. A selector opening on a combinator is parted from what precedes it by that combinator, so the space says nothing and the printer writes it tight everywhere else — a{>b{top:0}} printed a >b{top:0} where a second pass writes a>b{top:0}, and the same for + and ~.

Which combinators those are is read off _COMBINATOR_CODES, the set the printer already writes tight, rather than spelled out again here. || is not in it, so a nested selector opening on a column combinator keeps its space here exactly as an authored one keeps it there.

Found by sweeping the comparison corpus under a target the lowerings run for. Swiper 14 carries the shape and goes from 45 bytes adrift of its own output to 20 — the 20 that remain are a different cause, which is the list being ordered before the parent is written in front of each selector, and needs a helper this change does not reach.

Measured against a feature-off baseline in the same session, best of nine: 8000 nested rules opening on a combinator print 165,778 bytes in 39.3 ms against 173,778 in 40.3 ms. The descendant and flat paths are byte-identical at 37.4 ms against 37.3 and 30.9 against 31.8 — nothing is added to a selector that was not opening on one.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — eight unit cases: the three combinators written tight, the same however the source spaced it, || and a descendant keeping their space, a parent written as a list, and a selector naming the parent itself with &. configCases/css/minify-nested-combinator reads eight shapes off the emitted stylesheet and checks it against a second pass. Writing no selector tight fails five of them and writing every selector tight fails two, which I checked by doing both.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. The same selector matches the same elements; it is written the way the printer writes the one an author spelled out.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used. It reduced the sweep finding to a{>b{top:0}}, found the set the printer writes tight rather than spelling one out, wrote the change and the cases, measured the cost against a feature-off baseline, and broke the guard in both directions to check the cases catch it. I reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed CSS minification for nested selectors beginning with child (>), sibling (+), or general sibling (~) combinators so their spacing stays consistent with printer output.
    • Preserved spacing for descendant and column (||) combinators, as well as correct output for parent references and selector lists.
    • Repeated minification now produces identical CSS.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for nested combinators, spacing variations, selector lists, parent references, and repeated minification.

Let’s rebase again

Lowering nesting parts the parent from the nested selector with a space, and
a selector opening on a combinator is parted by that combinator instead — so
`a{>b{top:0}}` printed `a >b` where a second pass writes `a>b`. Read off
`_COMBINATOR_CODES`, the set the printer writes tight, so `||` keeps its
space here as it keeps it there. Swiper 14 loses 25 bytes of it.
