Summary

Closes #22682 (builds on it; @aryanraj45 is co-author).

A module's graph hash counted only how many of its connections were inactive, so when one unused dependency went missing as another came back, watch kept code naming the old one. #22682 fixed that by hashing the inactive targets' graph hashes, but those include the target's id and export usage, which a module that doesn't use the target never prints. So an unrelated usage change rebuilt it. This hashes each inactive connection's request instead.

// #22682
if (targetCgm.id === null) unnamedInactive.push(request);
else inactiveSum += this._getModuleGraphHashBigInt(targetCgm, target, runtime);
// this PR
inactiveRequests.push(`${dependency.getResourceIdentifier()}`);

m.js imports x from a.js but never uses it; index.js switches from a.x to a.y:

main #22682 this PR
swap which unused dependency is missing stale code rebuilt rebuilt
m.js graph hash after the a.x → a.y change unchanged changed unchanged

It also no longer creates a ChunkGraphModule for inactive targets outside any chunk.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/watchCases/recover-from-error/restored-unused-dependency (swap steps from #22682, fail on main) and test/watchCases/cache/inactive-dependency-hash (fails with #22682's hashing).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Yes: Claude Code reviewed #22682, reproduced the extra rebuild, wrote the request-only change and the new watch case; the result was checked by running both watch cases on main, #22682 and this branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Watch mode now rebuilds modules when missing, unused dependencies are replaced by different requests, improving recovery as files are added, removed, or swapped.

A module's graph hash counted its inactive connections only, so watch kept
stale code when one unused dependency went missing as another came back.
Hash their requests instead: unlike the target's graph hash, a request does
not change when the target's id or export usage does.

📝 Walkthrough

ChunkGraph now includes inactive dependency resource identifiers in graph hashes and sorts multiple identifiers before hashing. Watch tests cover cache hash checks and missing URL targets that swap across compilation steps.

Changes: Watch-mode dependency hashing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hash inactive dependency requests
lib/graph/ChunkGraph.js, .changeset/013-watch-inactive-dependency-swap.md
ChunkGraph records inactive dependency resource identifiers instead of only counting inactive connections. It hashes the identifiers in sorted order and checks for recorded inactive requests before using the unchanged-hash fast path.
Check cache hashes across watch steps
test/watchCases/cache/inactive-dependency-hash/0/*, test/watchCases/cache/inactive-dependency-hash/1/*, test/watchCases/cache/inactive-dependency-hash/webpack.config.js, test/watchCases/cache/inactive-dependency-hash/test.filter.js
The test checks exports across two steps and reports an error if the graph hash for m.js changes between compilations. The filter excludes configurations with cacheUnaffected enabled.
Test swapped missing URL targets
test/watchCases/recover-from-error/restored-unused-dependency/0/*, test/watchCases/recover-from-error/restored-unused-dependency/{1..4}/*, test/watchCases/recover-from-error/restored-unused-dependency/webpack.config.js
The fixture swaps missing URL targets across watch steps and checks the expected resolution errors. Its configuration enables module concatenation for index 0 and disables it for index 1.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b34df

The change makes watch-mode hashes reflect inactive dependency requests, while unresolved targets are rebuilt when their paths change. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

- Line 2078: Encode the sorted inactive request identifiers as a single
unambiguous value in the hashing logic near the `inactiveRequests` loop,
replacing the repeated `hash.update(request)` calls. Preserve the existing
sorting behavior when multiple requests are present.
