Summary

With the default experiments.asyncWebAssembly: "auto", a .wasm request that gets a loader (inline, or injected by a plugin hook) had the loader's JavaScript output fed to the wasm parser. #21365 promised such modules keep being parsed as JavaScript; css/html did, wasm didn't, because "auto" resolved to true instead of keeping the marker.

Now "auto" is kept (still false when syncWebAssembly is on or a rule matches .wasm), and AsyncWebAssemblyModulesPlugin applies the same implicitTypeLoaderFallback css/html use. Explicit asyncWebAssembly: true, !=! requests and loader-free .wasm are unchanged.

// js-loader.js returns 'module.exports = "LOADED_BY_CUSTOM_LOADER";'
require("./js-loader.js!./inline.wasm");
Result
Before CompileError: magic header not detected
After "LOADED_BY_CUSTOM_LOADER"

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/configCases/wasm/auto-loader-fallback/ (inline loader, hook-injected loader, loader-free .wasm), and test/unitCases/Defaults.unittest.js updated to expect "auto".

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. The resolved value is "auto" instead of true, which is still truthy; the option type already allowed "auto".

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • In automatic async WebAssembly mode, .wasm files processed by a custom loader are now handled as JavaScript, including when loaders are added through hooks.
    • Loader-free .wasm files continue to use built-in async WebAssembly behavior.
    • Automatic mode now remains "auto" in configurations where async WebAssembly should not be enabled by default.

…syncWebAssembly` "auto" default

Keep the "auto" marker after resolving, like css/html, so
AsyncWebAssemblyModulesPlugin steps aside for modules loaders were applied to.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Async WebAssembly remains in auto mode under the updated default conditions. In that mode, webpack registers an implicit loader fallback for async .wasm requests. Updated tests cover default resolution and loader behavior.

Changes

Async WebAssembly loader fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Auto-mode defaults
lib/config/defaults.js, lib/util/implicitTypeLoaderFallback.js
The default logic retains "auto" when sync WebAssembly is disabled and no rule handles .wasm. The fallback utility documentation now includes async WebAssembly.
Fallback registration
lib/wasm/AsyncWebAssemblyModulesPlugin.js
When async WebAssembly is "auto", the plugin registers an implicit fallback for case-insensitive .wasm requests with the async WebAssembly module type.
Default configuration expectations
test/unitCases/Defaults.unittest.js
Snapshots and auto-mode tests update async WebAssembly expectations and related future-default configuration output.
Loader behavior tests and release note
test/configCases/wasm/auto-loader-fallback/*, .changeset/024-async-wasm-auto-loader-fallback.md
Configuration tests cover inline and hook-injected JavaScript loaders, and verify that a loader-free .wasm import retains async WebAssembly behavior. The Changeset declares a patch release.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b4450

This change stops loader-produced JavaScript for .wasm requests from being parsed as WebAssembly under the default auto setting. Explicit asyncWebAssembly: true and loader-free .wasm behavior stay the same. No merge-blocking risk was found.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.
