Summary

The first step of moving webpack's JavaScript parser to a struct-of-arrays tree, which the minifier will read without building ESTree objects. Nothing builds one yet, so no build path changes.

  • SyntaxTree (in syntax-parser.js) holds a tree as typed-array columns; a node is an integer id from 1, 0 is no node, as in the CSS and HTML trees.
  • webpack.javascript.syntax.toEstreeObject(tree, node, fields?) builds a node's ESTree object, the same object each call; with fields, only those, and the rest on a later call. It builds from a work stack, so a tree deeper than the call stack still converts.
  • The node field table is generated into lib/javascript/data.js by tooling/generate-js-data.js.
const { toEstreeObject } = require("webpack").javascript.syntax;

const node = toEstreeObject(tree, call, ["callee"]); // { type, start, end, callee }
toEstreeObject(tree, call) === node; // true, now with `arguments` and `optional`

Every tree parsed from test262, the swc, oxc and terser corpora and five libraries rebuilds identically: 347,191 trees.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, test/unitCases/JavascriptSyntaxTree.unittest.js: a round trip of every node type under the build's and the minifier's options, partial building, regex and bigint literals, unset fields, reset, a 100,000-deep tree, and unknown types and fields.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

docs/syntax.md describes toEstreeObject and the generated NODE_FIELDS table.

Use of AI

Written with Claude Code. It collected the parser's node schema from the corpora, wrote the tree, the generator table and the tests, and checked the round trip over every corpus. The author reviews every commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • JavaScript syntax trees can now be converted into ESTree-compatible objects, with support for building selected fields first and completing them later.
    • Repeated conversions of the same node return the same object, and literal metadata is preserved.
    • JavaScript syntax trees can be built and reset, with validation for node types and fields.
  • Documentation
    • Added documentation describing the conversion API and JavaScript node field mappings.

Adds generated field schemas and typed storage for JavaScript syntax nodes. Exposes toEstreeObject to build and cache ESTree objects from stored nodes, including selective field construction.

Changes

JavaScript Syntax Tree and ESTree Conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Node field schemas
tooling/generate-js-data.js, lib/javascript/data.js, docs/syntax.md
Defines field kinds and slots, generates and exports NODE_FIELDS, and documents the mapping.
SyntaxTree storage
lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/JavascriptSyntaxTree.unittest.js
Adds typed storage and mutation methods for node types, offsets, flags, fields, values, and lists. Tests cover reset behavior and validation.
ESTree reconstruction
lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js, lib/javascript/syntax.js, test/unitCases/JavascriptSyntaxTree.unittest.js, docs/syntax.md, .changeset/093-javascript-syntax-to-estree-object.md
Adds selective, memoized conversion and literal-field reconstruction. Exports and documents the API. Tests cover conversion, incremental field population, and deeply nested trees.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c215b

This adds a new syntax-tree store and ESTree conversion that no build path uses yet, so the risk to existing builds is limited. One earlier code-structure concern about object shape stability is still open. The owner should confirm it is addressed or no longer applies before merging.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2216 test(s), 8595 asset(s), 99 emitted nothing.

Comment thread lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js Outdated
The first step of moving webpack's JavaScript parser to a struct-of-arrays
tree. `JavascriptNodeStore` holds the 73 node types the parser makes: a
node is an integer ref, its type, offsets and flags live in typed-array
columns, and child lists in one flat span array. `toEstreeObject(ref)`
builds the ESTree object a consumer reads, the same object each time;
`toEstreeObject(ref, fields)` builds only the fields listed, and a later
call adds the rest to that object.

Nothing uses the store yet. Every tree parsed from test262, the swc, oxc
and terser corpora and five libraries, under the options a build and the
minifier parse with, rebuilds identically: 329,224 of 329,228 trees. The
other four are swc's deliberately overflowing `1 + 1 + …` chain, which
runs out of stack as every recursive consumer of that tree does.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Tgxgyb4N35ndP6cC4KcrXC
Drop `JavascriptNodeStore`: the parser's `SyntaxTree` holds the columns,
`javascript.syntax.toEstreeObject(tree, node, fields?)` builds ESTree
objects from it, and the node field table is generated into `data.js`.
Nodes count from 1, with `0` as no node, as in the CSS and HTML trees.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Tgxgyb4N35ndP6cC4KcrXC
`toEstreeObject` recursed once per nested node, so a tree deeper than the
call stack threw a `RangeError`. It now builds children from a work stack.

(by [@Eshiv-Pandey](https://github.com/Eshiv-Pandey) in [#22280](webpack/webpack#22280))
