Motivation

  • Ensure CSS assets whose filenames include fragment or query suffixes (for example fragment.css#dark) are recognized and minified by the built-in CSS minimizer.
  • The previous filter only allowed query suffixes and therefore skipped fragment-suffixed asset names.

Description

  • Relax cssMinify.filter to use the regex /.css(?:[?#].*)?$/i so assets with either ? or # suffixes are claimed for minification.
  • Update the test harness to simulate a legacy plugin emitting an asset named fragment.css#dark and add an expectation that fragment.css is minified.
  • Add a changeset file .changeset/008-css-minify-fragment-suffix.md documenting the patch.

Testing

  • Ran the updated test case test/configCases/css/minimize-experiments-true and its assertions succeeded for the added fragment.css expectation.
  • Existing assertions in the same test case (for bundle0.css, copied.css, and already.css) continued to pass.

Codex Task

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • JavaScript, CSS, and HTML assets with fragment suffixes are now correctly recognized for minification, including filenames generated with both query and fragment components.
    • Asset names with ? or # before the file extension are no longer incorrectly treated as matching that asset type.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Default minimizer matching and JavaScript, CSS, and HTML filters now accept filenames with query or fragment suffixes after the extension. The asset-module test checks fragment-suffixed asset URLs and minimized output across two builds.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset that both runs emit changed size — everything below is new or deleted.

webpack itself emits such names: asset modules default to
`[hash][ext][query][fragment]`, and `output.filename` may contain `#`.
Widen the `jsMinify`/`htmlMinify` filters and the default minimizer's
`test` (both branches) to accept a `#` suffix, and cover it with a
config case that emits these names through webpack rather than by
writing to `compilation.assets`.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01EpeANYvMKyZwSDTRVE5LoG
`/\.css(?:[?#].*)?$/` also claimed `data.txt#a.css`, and the CSS minifier
then emptied it. Anchor the three filters and the default `test` so the
extension is the one before the first `?` or `#`.

* feat: minify JSON assets under futureDefaults

Add `optimization.minimizeOptions.json`, which dispatches JSON assets to
minimizer-webpack-plugin's `jsonMinify`. It defaults to `true` with
`experiments.futureDefaults` and steps aside for a user JSON minimizer.

* fix: keep JSON tokens exact and require both matchers to claim

Minify JSON assets with webpack's own whitespace-only jsonMinify so large
integers and exponents survive, and leave non-JSON .json assets as written.
A configured minimizer now claims a type only when its test and include
both match.

* test: cover jsonMinify directly

The default minimizer runs it in a worker, where integration cases do not
collect coverage, so exercise it the way jsMinify.unittest.js does.

* test: keep coverage instrumentation out of jsonMinify

The minimizer ships it to its worker pool as source, where the injected
coverage counters are undefined, like the other worker minifiers.

* test: check minimize-json assets from the config

futureDefaults emits an ESM bundle, which reaches fs through createRequire
and so fails on Node 10; read the emitted files in afterEmit instead.

* fix: match JSON asset names carrying a fragment

Use the same name pattern #22277 gave the JS, CSS and HTML minifiers, so
`data.json#hash` is minified too.
