Summary

More of the gzip gap to lightningcss, with rewrites that keep every computed value the same:

  • A longhand right after its own shorthand folds into it: border-* sides, outline, column-rule, text-emphasis, flex-flow, text-decoration (where the target reads every slot), flex, and a one-layer transition or animation. text-wrap and IE10's -ms-flex stay out.
  • flex with fewer than three components is read as its three factors.
  • A basic shape drops its defaults: a closest-side radius, a zero round, nonzero, and the sides inset() repeats.
/* before */ a{animation:x 2s linear;animation-iteration-count:infinite;border-left:none;border-left-width:0;flex:1 auto;clip-path:inset(0 0 0 0 round 0)}
/* after  */ a{animation:x 2s linear infinite;border-left:0;flex:auto;clip-path:inset(0)}

Not done, on purpose: background-position:left 1em top 50% → 1em 50% and circle(r at 50% 50%) → circle(r) change what Chromium reads back from getComputedStyle. Writing four border sides as border-width/-style/-color saved bytes but made gzip worse on every sheet it touched.

Gzip over the 30 stylesheets lightningcss parses in tooling/compare-css-tools.js, license comments extracted:

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: cases in test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, and test/configCases/css/minimize-shorthand-folds, which the syntax-equivalence suite checks in each browser.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • CSS minification folds eligible longhand declarations into shorthand properties, including animation and transition values, while preserving cases where combining declarations could change behavior.
    • Flex shorthand values and supported basic-shape functions are shortened by removing redundant defaults.

…basic shapes

Three rewrites lightningcss makes and webpack did not, each checked against
the computed style Chromium reads back:

- A longhand right after its own shorthand folds into it: the order-free
  families (`border-top`, `outline`, `column-rule`, `text-emphasis`,
  `flex-flow`, `text-decoration` where the target reads every slot), `flex`,
  and a one-layer `transition` or `animation`. `text-wrap` stays out, read as
  one keyword before it had longhands, and so does IE10's `-ms-flex`.
- `flex` in fewer than three components reads as its three factors, so
  `1 auto` is `auto` and `1 1` is `1`.
- A basic shape drops its defaults: a `closest-side` radius, a zero `round`,
  `nonzero`, and the sides `inset()` repeats. Not the `at` position, which
  engines read back as written.

The `animation` keyword slots come from the generator, out of mdn-data.

Writing four border sides as `border-width`/`-style`/`-color` saved raw bytes
but cost gzip on every stylesheet it touched, and the 3/4-value
`background-position` collapse changes what Chromium reads back, so neither
is here. Over the 30 comparison stylesheets, extracted license comments, the
gzip total is 56 B smaller and 1,804 B under lightningcss's.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CSS minifier folds eligible longhands into preceding shorthands, shortens authored flex values, and removes supported default arguments from basic-shape functions. Generated animation keyword data, unit tests, and an integration fixture cover these changes.

Changes

CSS minification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Slot-aware shorthand folding
tooling/generate-css-data.js, lib/css/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/configCases/css/minimize-shorthand-folds/*, .changeset/104-css-minify-shorthand-folds.md
The data generator emits animation keyword slots. The parser folds eligible longhands into supported shorthands and skips empty, superseded, or removable prefixed declarations during adjacency checks. Unit tests and the integration fixture cover folding behavior.
Authored flex shortening
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/configCases/css/minimize-shorthand-folds/style.css
The printer uses authored flex defaults to shorten eligible values. It retains separate handling for -ms-flex. Tests cover shorter forms and cases that remain unchanged.
Basic-shape default reduction
lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/configCases/css/minimize-shorthand-folds/style.css
The printer removes supported default arguments from basic-shape functions when their forms are recognized and the result is shorter. Tests cover supported shapes and cases that remain unchanged.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to adff7

The CSS minification changes look mostly safe. Two minor concerns remain: the changeset format, and a rare case where an invalid zero radius with a non-length unit could be turned into a valid declaration. Neither is likely to block use.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the changeset to follow the repository format.

The changeset breaks two rules:

  • The filename has no zero-padded ordering prefix. The rule requires the form NNN-description.md.
  • The summary is longer than 80 characters.

Rename the file with an ordering prefix, and shorten the sentence.

Proposed fix
-Shorten more CSS when minifying: `flex` written in fewer than three components, basic shapes' default arguments, and a longhand folded into the shorthand right before it.
+Fold longhands into shorthands and drop flex and basic-shape defaults.

As per path instructions: "single imperative sentence <= 80 chars ... filename NNN-description.md with zero-padded ordering prefix."

Source: Path instructions

…keep path()'s fill rule outside clip-path

Three things CI found on the fold and the shape rewrite:

- The fold read the printed values lowercased, which writes
  `placeholderShimmer` back as `placeholdershimmer`, a name no keyframes
  carry. It now reads them as written.
- Under a target the prefix pass drops `-webkit-animation-iteration-count`
  after the fold ran, so the fold took it for a declaration standing between
  `animation` and its longhand and a second minify folded what the first did
  not. An alias that pass drops, and any declaration already dropped, now
  stands between nothing.
- Only `clip-path` gives `path()` a fill rule, so `offset-path:path(nonzero,
  …)` is a value the engine drops, which dropping `nonzero` brought back.

The changeset takes the numbered name and one short sentence.

🟡 Minor · _ZERO_RADIUS_RE accepts any unit, so an invalid zero radius can be… · syntax-printer.js:3337

lib/css/syntax-printer.js:3337
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

_ZERO_RADIUS_RE accepts any unit, so an invalid zero radius can be dropped and the declaration becomes valid.

_ZERO_RADIUS_RE ends in (?:[a-z]+|%)?, so it matches 0deg, 0s, 0fr and similar. Take inset(0 round 0deg). A browser rejects the radius, which invalidates the whole declaration, so clip-path is never applied. This code drops the whole radius and prints inset(0), which is valid and clips. The author already excludes this class of rewrite for path(), because it turns a discarded value into a valid one. The same risk applies to rect() and xywh().

Limit the unit to % or a real length unit. _LENGTH_UNITS already exists in this file and _ZERO_LENGTH_RE is built from it.

Proposed fix
-const _ZERO_RADIUS_RE = /^[+-]?(?:0+(?:\.0*)?|\.0+)(?:[a-z]+|%)?$/i;
+const _ZERO_RADIUS_RE = new RegExp(
+	`^[+-]?(?:0+(?:\\.0*)?|\\.0+)(?:%|${_LENGTH_UNITS})?$`,
+	"i"
+);

_LENGTH_UNITS is declared in lib/css/syntax-parser.js. Export and import it, or reuse the existing _ZERO_LENGTH_RE pattern.

Update _ZERO_RADIUS_RE so it recognizes zero values only with no unit, a percent
unit, or a valid length unit; reuse the existing length-unit pattern rather than
accepting arbitrary alphabetic units. Preserve radius values such as 0deg and 0s
so rect(), xywh(), and other affected shapes are not rewritten into valid
declarations.

`inset(0 round 0deg)` is a value the engine drops, since a corner radius is a
`<length-percentage>`; reading any unit as a zero turned it into `inset(0)`,
which clips. The radius is now read as the zero offsets a translation takes.
…ctly

A shape is only rewritten inside a declaration's value, so the fallback for
no declaration never ran and left the one changed line no test reaches.
