feat(html): bundle a run of inline <script> tags into one chunk named after the page - #22188
Conversation
Inline `<script type="module">` bodies were extracted one chunk per tag, so a page paid a request per tag and re-instantiated whatever they shared. A run of them now shares an entry: the tags are added as that entry's array, the first tag loads the chunk and the rest are dropped from the document. Module scripts are deferred and evaluate in tag order, so a run ends at any other `<script>` — an `async` one, a classic body, an external `src` — and merging only runs under `output.module`, where the emitted tags stay module scripts rather than becoming parser-blocking classic ones.
An inline `<script>` body has no url to be named after, so its chunk was emitted under the entry name the parser mints — a hash of the page's path and the tag's index, `__html_cbe5b59d_0.js`. The page's own basename names it instead, the way a `<script src>` is named after the url it carries, and `claimName` numbers the rest: `page.js`, `page1.js`. That is what the path hash was for, so two pages of one basename stay apart without it. A page that has no basename of its own — a `data:` document behind `<iframe srcdoc>` — still falls back to the entry name.
Under `output.module` a classic inline `<script>` is upgraded to a module tag, so it is deferred and evaluates in tag order like the `type="module"` bodies already merged — the property the merge rests on. A run now takes either kind, but not both at once: the two compile differently and an entry's array is filled group by group, so a run holding both would execute its members in group order rather than the document's. A dropped tag is also no longer rewritten — the ` type="module"` reconciled into a classic tag sat inside the removed range and survived it as text.
A run was split where the kinds met, because an entry's tags are collected group by group — so a module body authored before a classic one was added after it, and the chunk would have run them in that order. The tags sharing an entry name are put back into the document's order once collected, which is the order the entry's array executes in, so a run now takes whatever inline bodies sit next to each other. Only the first tag of a name carries the entry's options, so a later one re-decides no `dependOn`.
`output.html.inline` and `<!-- webpackInline: true -->` reached only the external tag path, so the one thing an author marked inline was the one thing fetched: the annotated `<script>` body was extracted to a chunk while an unmarked `<script src>` beside it was written into the page. An inline body's tag now takes the same decision. It keeps the tag as written and puts the chunk's code where the body was, so the page needs no request and the chunk is dropped once nothing else references it. A run is one chunk, so one tag asking for it inlines the run. The option is read through one helper both paths share, rather than a second copy of it.
Three things were left over by the inline-script work. An ES module chunk another group takes its runtime from cannot be written into the page: the dependent still imports it by url, so the file is emitted too and the page runs two module registries. It now stays a file, on both the inline and the `<script src>` path — classic output is unaffected, where a dependent finds the runtime through the `webpackChunk` global instead. Classic output can merge a run as well, where before only module output could. A deferred tag runs after parsing wherever it sits, but a classic one runs where it stands, so a classic run may span only whitespace and comments — markup a later body could read ends it. And `output.html.inline`'s pattern form now also matches the name a chunk is emitted under, so a page's own run can be named rather than the synthetic entry the parser minted for it.
The filename a tag emitted under already came from the page; the entry name
behind it did not, so `__html_<pathhash>_<index>` stayed in stats, in named
chunk ids and in the runtime's chunk map.
The page's own path names it instead — `src/pages/index.html` extracts as
`src-pages-index-0` — which is what the hash stood in for: two pages of one
compilation still cannot claim the same name. A page with no path of its own
keeps a digest of the one thing telling it from another, and lends its
holder's name to the file it emits, so an `<iframe srcdoc>` script is now
`home1.js` rather than `__html_a8f74fea_0.js`.
Config that told webpack's extracted entries from its own by that prefix
matches the page's name instead: `entrypoint.name.startsWith("page-")`.

The pattern deciding whether a classic run may span what sits between two tags backtracks exponentially: an alternation of whitespace and a lazily closed comment, repeated. A page whose tags are separated by `<!--` and enough `--><!--` hangs the build — measured at 1.08s for 26 of them, and doubling every two. The span is scanned instead, which reads each character once: 200k of the same repetitions answer in 13ms.

HtmlGenerator.isChunkInlined so each caller-supplied RegExp resets lastIndex to
0 before testing name and again before testing filenameTemplate. Preserve the
existing short-circuit behavior and only test filenameTemplate when it is a
string.
- Around line 614-619: Update isChunkInlined to match the resolved emitted

filename-resolution helper with the appropriate content type and compilation

In `@lib/html/HtmlParser.js`:

inlineRunEntryName and inlineRunLeaderDependency when an ignored script’s start
differs from inlineRunTag, preserving normal handling for non-ignored elements.
- Around line 202-216: Update entryNamePrefix so distinct page paths such as
sub/page.html and sub-page.html produce unique parser entry names before
dependencies are created. Propagate the same unique name consistently through
HtmlModulesPlugin.collectEntrySpecs, HtmlInlineScriptDependency, and
HtmlEntryDependency, including all plugin-side lookups, so Compilation.addEntry
cannot merge unrelated pages.
In `@test/configCases/html/inline-script-classic/index.js`:
- Around line 68-69: Update the shared HtmlParser run logic to track each
script’s effective scheduling type and terminate a run when it changes, keeping

output.module is enabled, treat both as module-scheduled because classic tags
are upgraded; update this fixture’s expected separate output tags and
parser-time boundary assertions while preserving the existing mixed
module-output run.

`String.prototype.matchAll` is newer than the Node the harness executes a case's bundle on, so the inline-module-merge case failed the Node 10 job with `matchAll is not a function`. Its sibling ESM cases carry a filter for Node 12; this one needs none — everything else in it runs on the baseline — so it collects its matches with exec in a loop instead.
Three findings from review, and one snapshot CI could not reproduce. A `<!-- webpackIgnore: true -->` script returns before the run boundary is read, so a run spanned it — and it stays in the document, running where it stands, while the bodies around it merged into one chunk that runs earlier. It ends a run now, like every other `<script>`. Two pages whose paths differ only by a separator sanitized to one entry name: `sub/page.html` and `sub-page.html` both read `sub-page`, which `Compilation.addEntry` merges, so each page would load the other's code. The mapping is reversible now — a `-` in the path doubles, and anything else outside a name is written as its code point. `output.html.inline`'s pattern form is caller-supplied, so a global one carries `lastIndex` from chunk to chunk and intermittently misses; it is reset before each test. Its schema text now says the pattern matches the filename template, which is what it reads. The inline-script chunk snapshot went to the run's leader, which carries the runtime — whose `hasOwnProperty` shorthand follows the Node the case runs under, so it differed on the 12.x and 14.x jobs. That chunk's content is asserted instead.
A classic body blocks the parser and a module one defers, so under classic output the two kinds no longer share a run: the run ends where they meet. Module output upgrades a classic tag to `type="module"`, so there every extracted tag defers and a run still takes both, as it did. The order this emits is unchanged — classic output downgrades a module tag to a blocking script either way — so this is about the boundary saying what the page asked for rather than what the downgrade left. One more snapshot follows the Node a case runs under: splitting the run moved the runtime into the classic chunk, whose `hasOwnProperty` shorthand reads from the environment. Its content is asserted instead.
A character outside `[\w.]` that is not a separator is kept as `_<hex>_`, which no fixture reached — `sub+page.html` now does, beside the pages that differ by a separator. It is the one line of the change no case drove.

Summary
Each inline
<script>body was extracted to its own chunk under a synthetic__html_<pathhash>_<index>name, so a page paid a request per tag and its emitted files were unreadable. A run of adjacent inline scripts now shares one chunk named after the page, andoutput.html.inline/<!-- webpackInline: true -->can write that chunk back into the document instead of fetching it.A run ends at anything that would reorder it — an
asynctag, an externalsrc, a non-JS<script>— and under classic output, where the tags are parser-blocking rather than deferred, at any markup between them. Execution order was checked against the unbundled page in a real browser, not only in tests. What kind of change does this PR introduce?

Did you add tests for your changes?
Yes — new
configCases/html/casesinline-module-merge,inline-script-classic-run,inline-script-write-backandinline-script-inline-option, plus updates toinline-script,inline-script-classic,script-typesand the cases that matched the old entry names.Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
No stable API changes. Within
experiments.htmlthe emitted filenames and entry names change: config that identified webpack's extracted entries withentrypoint.name.startsWith("__html_")should match the page's name instead (entrypoint.name.startsWith("page-")forpage.html).If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?
output.html.inline's description is updated in the schema (its pattern form now also matches the name a chunk is emitted under, and a chunk another entry loads its runtime from by url stays a file). The naming of extracted inline scripts is worth a line in theexperiments.htmldocs after merge.Use of AI
Yes. Claude Code was used to write the implementation and the tests, and to run the verification: the ecosystem comparison this design follows (Vite, Parcel, Bun on the same fixture) and the browser runs that compare execution order against the unbundled page. The full test suite for the touched areas and
yarn lintwere run locally on the rebased branch.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
