Summary

Our parser is a port of acorn, so this vendors acorn's own test suite (3534 cases) and holds both parser entry points to it — trees, comments, tokens and error messages all match, under three option sets. Checking acorn's open issues against us found one we inherited, acornjs/acorn#1445: validating a regexp that repeats a capture group name is quadratic in the nesting depth, so 160 alternatives each nesting a same-named group 160 deep took 7.4s against 0.09s for distinct names, and now takes 0.12s.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/unitCases/WebpackParser.unittest.js (the acorn corpus, and the recording of it) and test/unitCases/RegExpValidator.unittest.js (nested duplicate-name patterns, plus a bound on what the repeated name costs over distinct ones).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — the validator accepts and rejects exactly what it did before, confirmed against acorn over the corpus and over 40k generated patterns.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a — AGENTS.md already says where the corpus lives and how to refresh it when the acorn devDependency moves.

Use of AI

Claude Code was used to audit acorn's open issues against our port, to write the corpus test and the validator rewrite, and to verify both (corpus parity, a differential fuzz against acorn, and the timing above). Every claim here was reproduced locally rather than taken from the model.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved regular expression processing performance for patterns with repeated named capture groups, enabling linear-time handling in applicable cases.
    • Preserved support for duplicate capture names in mutually exclusive alternatives while continuing to reject invalid repetitions.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for deeply nested alternatives and compatibility comparisons against the Acorn parser corpus.
    • Added shared tooling for clearer parser comparison results.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded project architecture documentation for parser test suites.

acorn ships no tests in its npm tarball, so `WebpackParser.unittest.js` records
them itself: it replays every `test/tests*.js` of an acorn checkout against a
driver that records rather than parses, and vendors each case's source, options
and expected error as `test/fixtures/acorn-corpus.json`. The expected trees are
left behind — the run takes those from acorn itself.

All 3534 cases go through both parser entry points under three option sets,
diffing trees, comments, tokens and error messages against acorn and
re-asserting acorn's own recorded verdicts. Where the checkout exists the run
also checks the corpus against it, and `WEBPACK_UPDATE_ACORN_CORPUS=1` rewrites
it. The tree diff moves to `test/helpers/compareParserOutput.js`, shared with
the test262 suite.
…ear time

Validating a named capture group compares its branch against every branch
already recorded for that name, and acorn compares two branches by walking one
chain per node of the other — quadratic in the nesting depth, per pair. A
pattern of 160 alternatives each nesting a same-named group 160 deep took
7.4s where the same pattern with distinct names took 0.09s.

A branch chain holds at most one branch per disjunction, so marking each
disjunction the first chain passed answers the comparison in one walk of the
second. The same pattern now validates in 0.12s (acornjs/acorn#1445).

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

The corpus exempted a fixed list of patterns from the verdict comparison: the
ones acorn rejects by edition that webpack takes as written because the host
engine built them. Which patterns those are is the running V8's answer, so a
newer one reads more of them and the list went stale — CI's V8 accepts ES2025
duplicate capture names and modifier groups, and 38 cases diverged there that
agree here.

The exemption now reads the tree webpack returned: a regexp literal the engine
built carries a real RegExp as its value. The ported base parser, which
validates every literal, is held to acorn with no exemption at all.

Two lines, as the lib/ review instruction asks, keeping what the code cannot
say: a chain holds one branch per disjunction, and acorn nests the walk.
acorn records `~Not enough stack space` for its deeply nested case, and the
comparison allowed for the two parsers reaching that depth a few frames apart.
It did not allow for a runtime reaching it on neither side: under Bun both
parse the case, so the recorded expectation goes unmet and the verdicts differ
from acorn's on V8.

Stack depth is the runtime's answer rather than the parser's, so a verdict or
a recorded expectation naming it is left alone on either side.

##### Minor Changes

- Apply `plugins` set on a multi-configuration array to the `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22702](webpack/webpack#22702))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.dropOverriddenDeclarations`, dropping a declaration a later one overrides where no target is named. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22175](webpack/webpack#22175))

- Export more plugins under their scope, move eleven loose exports under theirs, deprecate the old, and expose `template.DependencyTemplate`, `module.NullFactory` and `util.makeSerializable`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22261](webpack/webpack#22261))

- Let `util.makeSerializable` take several requests, current one first. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22340](webpack/webpack#22340))

- Emit the source map `scopes` field, so a debugger resolves imported ESM bindings by name. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21999](webpack/webpack#21999))

- Add `library.entryExports: "all"` to expose the exports of every entry module. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22235](webpack/webpack#22235))

- Recognize a required `const` binding assigned to `exports` as a re-export. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22276](webpack/webpack#22276))

- Accept glob patterns in more path, module and file filter options. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22422](webpack/webpack#22422))

- Bundle a run of inline `<script>` tags into one chunk the page can inline. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22188](webpack/webpack#22188))

- Add `module.parser.javascript.topLevelThis` for classic-script `this` semantics. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22193](webpack/webpack#22193))

- Add `optimization.splitChunks.dedupDepth` to discover chunk intersections. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22240](webpack/webpack#22240))

- Add `optimization.minimizeOptions.json`, on by default with `futureDefaults`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22286](webpack/webpack#22286))
