Summary

Fixes in the HTML and CSS minifiers, plus a browser check that found one more bug.

  1. A style value spelled with a character reference kept neither the minified nor the lowered CSS:

before:

after:

  1. A CSS string holding ' left the whole style unminified:

before:

after:

  1. An inlined chunk in a minified ended in ;;; now one ;.

  2. A in
lost its content to
. The printer now reads the page as a browser with scripting on does. The bundler still finds the URLs inside it.

``<img src=x.gif>``
t

before:

t

``<img src=x.gif>``…
after:
``<img src=x.gif>``
t

  1. mergeDistantRules:
    • It now merges past rules that only match other element types (h1{…}@media print{h3{…}}h2{…} → h1,h2{…}…). Water.css: 3490 → 3389 B gzip.
    • It no longer moves an all block above a rule that should win: .a{all:unset}p{color:red}.b{all:unset} became .a,.b{all:unset}p{color:red}, turning p.b red.
    • It no longer mangles a rule whose selector list it grew: .z{…}.z{all:unset;…}…h2.y{all:unset;…} came out as .z{…;h2.y{…}, with a } and a rule lost.

The last bug was found by a new syntax-equivalence tier. It compares every element's computed style with and without the merge, over a seeded corpus, configCases and the benchmark stylesheets.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes:

  • test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js and test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js.
  • test/configCases/html/inline-script-minified/.
  • test/specCases/html5lib.spectest.js: the script-on tree cases now run.
  • The new tier in test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js, with its helper in test/helpers/syntaxEquivalence.js.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The mergeDistantRules description now says a rule between that only matches other element types does not block the merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved CSS rule merging across unrelated element types while preserving cascade behavior when selectors may overlap.
    • Fixed HTML style-attribute minification across different spellings and quote styles, including strings with apostrophes and escaped quotes.
    • Corrected minified inline script output to preserve required semicolons without adding duplicates.
    • Improved parsing and serialization based on scripting settings, and preserved necessary whitespace around head content.

…elled it

The CSS minifier's answer is written whenever it differs from what the
source decodes to, at its shortest encoding, instead of only where it beat
the source's raw bytes. Run the html5lib CDATA tokenizer cases through the
tree builder and retire two HTML invariant exceptions.
…te kind

A string holding an apostrophe is written '-wrapped with \' escapes in a
block-contents print, so the attribute escapes nothing.
A head `` read with scripting off lost its content to the body.
The wpt script-on tree cases now run under the flag.
A rule whose subjects all name other element types never reaches an element
the moved selectors match. A block setting `all` no longer moves past what
declares anything since it was held.
…ecord

The neighbor join read a list the merge grew by its old length and cut it
there, folding half a selector into the rule before it.
Each stylesheet is printed with and without the merge, and every element its
selectors reach is read under both, over a seeded corpus, configCases and the
benchmark stylesheets.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update CSS distant-rule merging, HTML style-attribute serialization and scripting-dependent noscript parsing, and inline-script sentinel resolution. Tests cover CSS cascade equivalence, HTML parser behavior, and minified inline-script output.

Changes

Distant CSS rule merging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subject-aware distant-rule merging
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, schemas/WebpackOptions.json, .changeset/095-css-merge-distant-rules-subjects.md
The merger tracks declarations globally and by element type. It uses selector subjects and property overlap to decide whether intervening declarations block a merge.
Merge regression and cascade validation
test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/helpers/syntaxEquivalence.js, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js
Unit tests cover typed selectors, overlapping rules, all, and removed rules. Browser tests compare computed cascades for changed stylesheet pairs.

HTML minification and parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Style-attribute lowering and string output
.changeset/015-html-style-attribute-lowering.md, lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/syntax-printer.js, lib/html/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js, tooling/compare-html-tools.js
Style attributes use dedicated serialization for minified declaration lists. CSS string output handles apostrophes and escaped double quotes. Tests cover literal and entity-encoded punctuation and quote handling.
Scripting-dependent noscript parsing
lib/html/syntax-parser.js, lib/html/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js, test/specCases/html5lib.spectest.js, tooling/generate-html-data.js
The parser uses raw-text handling for noscript when scripting is enabled. Printing enables scripting, and whitespace removal checks preceding head content. Tests cover scripting modes and SVG-fragment CDATA cases.

Inline-script resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inline sentinel terminator handling
.changeset/094-html-inline-script-terminator.md, lib/html/HtmlGenerator.js, test/configCases/html/inline-script-minified/*
The resolver preserves a captured terminator when a chunk is missing and avoids appending it when the inlined content already ends with a semicolon. The config case checks the resulting HTML.

Suggested reviewers: bjohansebas

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e38e2

The new cascade checks may miss behavior involving imported stylesheets, leaving a bounded validation gap. This is not evidence of a production failure, but the comparisons do not fully cover imported-rule cascades.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e38e2

The inspected changes preserve context escaping and per-call parser cleanup without establishing a new execution or privilege boundary. No security regression was established, but incomplete before-and-after verification limits confidence.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected sensitive outcome is generated browser-facing HTML containing transformed source attributes and compiled chunk assets. The examined caller relationships do not establish expanded tenant, service, credential, or environment authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inline-sentinel resolver looks up compilation-owned chunks and assets, escapes embedded-language boundary markers, and records files only after their content is appended. Missing chunks retain the captured terminator.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — When HTML output verification detects a changed tree digest, the printer replaces its result with the original input. Cleanup still runs through finally, limiting retained parser state on that recovery path.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

Do not adopt import-bearing text with replaceSync().

compareCascades passes each pair directly to CSSStyleSheet.replaceSync(), which removes @import rules. The configCases and benchmark paths can pass import-bearing CSS through mergePair; no caller resolves or rejects those imports. The generated corpus does not emit imports.

Imported rules or custom properties can therefore be absent from both adopted sheets, allowing different complete stylesheets to report equivalent cascades. Resolve imports before adoption, or reject import-bearing pairs.

An abrupt `` ends at once and `--!>` closes one too, so
text between them leaves the head for a reader with scripting off.
…ments

WebKit styles a nested
/
and a box-less element apart from the
tree around them, which read as cascade differences no page could show.
V8 hands back the function first compiled from the same text, bound to the
Jest environment that compiled it, so the suite failed whenever it ran after
syntax-printer.unittest.js in one worker.
WebKit kept the Materialize probe root's inherited font and custom properties
from before its sheet applied, so the unmerged read differed from the merged
one on rules both prints hold alike. Reinserting the root before each read
resolves its subtree afresh against the sheet then adopted.
Reinserting the root before each read reloaded replaced elements between the
reads, so Firefox laid the document out at different heights for one sheet.
Building the tree detached and inserting it after the adoptions styles the
root afresh, which is what WebKit needed, and leaves the reads one layout.
